Q&As with DJ Perry

How did you get your start in collections?

“Not unlike many in this industry…it kind of found me. I was a construction sub-contractor and following the winter of ’09-’10 I was just looking for something a bit more stable. I had an amazing trainer that was impressed with me on the phones and he pulled me aside one day telling me I could be great and have a career if I really wanted. That was a turning point for me and I’ve been hooked ever since.”

How has your previous 7 years of collections experience helped you in your role today?

“I spent almost two years on the phones and almost five years as a frontline supervisor across all types of portfolios living and breathing what our clients face today. I feel like I’m able to connect with anyone that’s in the industry with a very similar perspective and truly understand what it takes to move the needle.”

What is one thing people may not know about DJ Perry?

“My first sales job was when I was 11 at a local mall. My mom took me in during the yo-yo craze of the late 90s and after showing off some of my…super sweet yo-yo skills (not really), the Manager told my mom and I that she’d pay me $10 in petty cash if I would spend the day demonstrating and answering questions for customers! Haha, I loved it.”

LocateSmarter offers a phone append product. If we were to search for you, how many phone numbers would we find for you?

“I’ve had two cell phone numbers and one land line…yes, I’m a millennial that had a land line. You might also find my work number, 319-292-1496. (Like seriously, we should talk shop.)”

What changes would you like to see in the collection/data industry?

“I’d like to see clear regulations for agencies to follow. There are too many unknowns that open the door to unnecessary time and money spent on litigation that I feel is very avoidable.”

So, the LocateSmarter team recently drafted their Fantasy Football teams. Who was your number 1 pick and who do you think will win the LocateSmarter league?

“David Johnson would have been my number one pick, hands down. Not only is he really that good, but he’s an Iowa boy and I got to see him put on quite a show at UNI. Tyler Benson 2017 LocateSmarter Fantasy Football Champion, 73% sure.”

When you’re not at work, how do you like to spend your free time?

“I have four amazing boys that keep me very busy! Mason, Gavin, Connor, and Caden ages 3-10. We enjoy sports, hunting, fishing, working on cars, riding dirt bikes, and driving Mom crazy. If I had my choice, I’d be working alongside my father-in-law and wife building cars in our little shop out in the country.”

September 10 was Grandparents Day. Tell us something you learned from your grandparents.

“I have been blessed with the most amazing grandparents. My grandpa was an Engineer at John Deere and I can remember being about 3 years old doing puzzles with him. He said something to me then that I’ll never forget and have applied to my entire life. “DJ, if the piece doesn’t fit…don’t force it” – Ed Brown”

All LocateSmarter employees take the Clifton StrengthsFinder. What are your strengths and how do you think they have helped you succeed in your position?

  1. Strategic
  2. Achiever
  3. Ideation
  4. Individualization
  5. Learner

“I’d like to think I’m a strong, out-of-the-box problem solver that’s driven and thirsty to learn and improve on what’s already been done. The individualization balances me so I don’t think of myself as a “numbers person” or “people person” – I really feel like I’m both and really look at people for who they are as individuals.”
