Q&As with Brandon Medlin:
How did you get your start in the data and collections industry?
“I’m coming up on 14 years in the collections industry. About three of those years have been with LocateSmarter. My career started as a debt collector. Certainly, one of the most challenging jobs I have had to date. Having been in the collector position is very much like having a degree in collections. It’s difficult to really understand and appreciate the importance of strategy, compliance, technology and culture unless you’ve walked in those shoes. Over the years, I’ve been in many operational, product management and technology leadership roles. I found it very useful in forcing myself out of my comfort zone. Similarly, I have started to shift out of leading our technology and operations at LocateSmarter and into leading our strategic alliance development. For some companies, you may call this business development or partnership development. I enjoy being unique and creative. With this new role, I look forward to bringing my experience into partnership development. Nothing excites me more than finding opportunities with partners who agree status quo no longer works for our industry.”
LocateSmarter announced a partnership with Simplicity Collection Software Fall 2017. Tell us about that.
“Let me first mention LocateSmarter had not pursed system integration partners in the past. We feared losing control of our customer support process. LocateSmarter not only has great products, but exceptional people. We don’t just say customer service is important, we prove it. With that, we’ve been somewhat resistant to this concept until recently. Simplicity really aligns with LocateSmarter’ s core values and culture. Even beyond values, there is alignment for process by which innovation is achieved. Furthermore, Simplicity has a piece of the market that LocateSmarter had not reached. We’ve learned a lot partnering with Simplicity, and we’re looking forward to several similar opportunities in 2018.”
LocateSmarter recently created your new role: Strategic Alliance Director. With what type of vendors are you looking to potentially partner?
“I think some of the obvious ones would be those providing systems to manage collection accounts, analytics and business processes; however, sometimes the most bizarre opportunities surface through the unlikely ones. For me, I like finding those. Those partnership models, at times, can become gamechangers. You never know what companies are cooking unless your networking.”
Next month, you will be attending RMA Annual for the first time. What are you hoping to accomplish there?
“I look forward to networking with potential partners. If anyone is interested in meeting up, let me know.” (Click here to email Brandon Medlin.)
How do you spend your time outside of work?
“I have a wonderful wife and a healthy 11 month old son, so I spend a lot of time with them, and, really, anything outdoors I enjoy. In the summer, I enjoy golfing and barbeques. Come Fall, it’s time for football and hunting.”
What is one thing people may not know about Brandon Medlin?
“I have a non-profit called Impact Outdoors. The organization is focused on providing outdoor program development and conservation. It can be time-consuming, but it’s our youth projects that keep things motivating. The organization has contributed thousands of dollars and hours into new development projects as well as education for youth and adults. One fun fact I like sharing is we’ve donated over 700 fishing poles and tackle to kids locally.”
What is your favorite quote?
“God gave us a body that can withstand almost anything. It’s our minds we have to persuade.” – Vince Lombardi
Did you have a New Year’s resolution this year?
“Hmmm, great question. I will commit to working out less and eating out more. Maybe I will see it through this year. If not, an unlikely fail would still be a positive outcome.”
Last Question: What changes would you like to see in the data/collection industry in 2018?
“There are many regulatory changes this industry could benefit from. I think the largest impact could be, in my opinion, TCPA reform. The TCPA has had a large impact to the bottom line for many companies. Mostly due to the investment companies made to comply as well as significant impacts on productivity.”
